Nothing – or next to nothing – to report – just another long + uncomfortable ride on a train, which we survived in the usual ways: reading, playing cards, etc. The annoying thing was that if we’d known we’d be travelling non-stop Beijing-Shanghai we could have had a comfortable sleeper. We arrived in Shanghai at about 6, + met up outside the stn with an Aussie girl who looked equally confused (Kim), + between the 3 of us we found the right bus, which delivered us to the hotel. No trouble whatever booking in, to our relief, after which Val + I went out for a short walk, to clear our heads + orient ourselves. Shanghai is supposed to be the most western of Chinese cities, but that doesn’t extend to its night scenery, which in the West is made up, I suppose, out of neon.
Another day, another city, but really by this stage we are simply ticking it off the list.
